Why two full-car paint estimates may differ
Both estimates may say full repaint, but one may include dent or rust repair while another assumes those problems will be handled separately. The condition of the car can change the work needed before paint. Ask which repairs are included and which would need another decision after the shop sees the car.
How the current paint affects preparation
A mark in the finish and clear coat peeling away are different problems. Clear coat can lose its bond with the color layer below; affected areas may need sanding and refinishing. A photo can show where you see damage, but the car needs a closer look to judge its extent.

How the finish you want changes the job
A repaint in the current color, a color change and a custom finish can involve different work. Tell the shop what you want the finished car to look like, so that result is clear in the estimate.
If some original paint will remain beside new paint, ask how the colors will meet. A match depends on more than a paint code: PPG points to formula choice, mixing, application and enough area to blend the new finish.
Compare the work before comparing the price
Use the same questions for each estimate. A price is easier to compare when you know what work and result it covers.
| Compare | Ask each shop |
|---|---|
| Existing finish | What preparation does the current paint or clear coat need? |
| Repair scope | Which dents, rust spots or damaged panels are included before painting? |
| Finish goal | What color and finish does the estimate cover? Will any original paint remain beside new paint? |
