The bumper cover can hide damage behind it
The painted outer piece is the bumper cover. Behind it are other parts, including an absorber and reinforcement. A mark on the cover alone cannot tell you whether those parts or the points that hold the cover in place were affected.
When can a bumper cover be repaired?
A surface scrape may call for paint work on the cover. A crack, a cover that no longer fits cleanly, or a damaged mounting point raises a different question: can this cover be restored under the current repair instructions for your vehicle? If that repair is not allowed or cannot restore the cover’s fit, replacement may be needed. The type of visible mark does not settle the choice by itself.
What does a bumper inspection need to establish?
Photos can show the damage you see, but they cannot establish what happened behind the cover. The repair scope depends on three findings:
- What happened to the cover and the points that hold it in place?
- Were the absorber or reinforcement behind it affected?
- What do the current instructions for this vehicle allow, including any requirements related to bumper-area sensors?
